We use tillage for summer weed control and to get rid of some of the straw on continious wheat . Generally  use about 3 passes  before planting end of September. Notill wheat works fine  after 100bu corn . Tillage is cheaper perpass than spraying.  Use to plow everthing 50  years  ago now its  mostly  disc and  field cultivate a couple of times. I do not have the sandy soil shown in Jons pictures.
