Kingston,Mi
We installed a diaphragm of filter fabric on a 24 inch corrugated steel pipe that washed out repeatedly. That cured that culvert. Allows the water to pass along the pipe but DOSEN'T ALLOW SOIL FINES TO MOVE. When soil fines don't move the possibility of piping failure is reduced. The various other diaphragm materials such as rubber sheeting extending out from the pipe at least 2 feet perpendicular in all directions (steel also) work by extending the flow path by 4 feet. On corrugated pipe we also went to bedding in 1 foot of 3/4 inch down gravel with a good representation of different aggregate sizes. Either of these 2 methods seemed to eliminate piping failures. The suggestion to install a flared end section is good as well or the use of riprap on filter fabric to dissapate the energy of the discharged water, prevent erosion of fines and subsequent failure.
