Good luck with the peonies. I don't know about up north, but in our area I heard on a talk radio show out of Champaign yesterday that peonies shouldn't be transplanted until late August. Given that, if you can spray your sod with Roundup, by fall you could just dig a hole large enough for your plants, plant them, then mulch if you wish. I'm assuming you have good soil, if not you could work a little compost into your planting hole. Peonies are very easy to grow as long as they have sunlight. Don't expect a flush of blooms for a couple of years though, or that has been my experience with transplanting plants that I have dug up. To establish beds, I make an outline with garden hoses and spray that area with Roundup. When everything is dead I work in compost and plant.
