I knew an old cattle guy that pelvic measured his own heifers.  Said his hand was just the right size.  Made a fist and inserted it upright.  (They should be taller than wide).  Any thing his fist passed thru was OK.  I think pelvic measuring is fine, but just finding and eliminating the misshapen and irregular ones is a big help.
