SW OH | Get a photo tach. You'll be surprised at all the things you will check the speed on.
You have to put a reflective sticker on what's turning. Doesn't matter if it's on a shaft or there outer edge of a 10 foot wheel. One revolution is the same at any diameter.
A laser beam is emitted from the hand held tach. A reflection from the sticker sends the laser beam back to the tach. It does the math and gives you RPMs.
A word of caution. When we set the spinners on our fertilizer spreader, I was getting crazy high numbers. Turns out the spinner disc itself was reflecting the laser beam. I painted the disc flat black and put a new sticker on, problem solved.
