Southern kansas | Round bales, cake feeders on pickups, and swinging metal gates has ruined this country. Also after a snow, where is that hungry kid with a snow shovel walking around?

WC IL | jpron - 3/14/2019 10:36 I don't read the posts as a detassling issue, rather a let some one else do the works our kids should be doing issue. my kids work there asses off, and yes they pick rock and help make hay, guess what they get paid? they get to be in baseball and softball and track. ill buy them something if I feel needed and it will be nice, but there is no allowance in this house. and there both 4.0 students. loved by adults for being polite and helpful. im not sitting here bragging about my kids, just telling it how it is!! maybe a little more smack on the head and a little less putting up with there crap from us the parents is the real problem!! I commend you for raising good kids that know the meaning and value of hard work. I feel the same way about my kids. Unfortunately those type of kids are the exception. And I fully agree with your assessment of parents these days- too many want to be their kids' friends, and not their parents. Too many kids running the household.

nw illinois | and I prefer the migrant crews. They are more efficient than kids and not hampered by child labor laws. The migrants dont ride on machines which is a huge plus not having to use those machines in irrigated production. Two summers ago there was a small drowned out spot in one of my fields. When the migrant got to the spot he sprinted (not exaggerating) around the wet hole to get to the other side to start pulling tassels again. A kid would have waited for his buddy to show up, shoot the $^it for a few minutes and then probably get on the wrong row at the other side of the drowned out spot. Ive got one 430 acre field they can get done in very long day if needed, would take 4 kid crews and one or two of them would probably have to quit early or do a poor job. I took my daughters and nieces to see them in action at the end of a 13 or 14 hour day. They couldnt believe how those workers were smiling and friendly after a long very hot muddy day. And they were also 2000 miles from home. The guy in charge is a super guy, very professional. IIRC he had about 145 workers and less then ten of them were new for the year. FWIW Only one of the five companies that grow in my area dont use migrants. Prairie Hybrids which is owned by an Amish/Mennonite family and uses that labor pool. I know at least 2 of the others used H2A long before P did so this is not something new. Edited by pigfarmerj 3/14/2019 17:14

| I don't think they have much choice any more. You might find one or to people that will do it and do a good job. No way could you find a crew here that would even show up. I detassled one year . Absolutely hated it. The pay was half of what I normally got. Every time you started to work you had to take a break. When you got to the end you had to wait for every one before we started back. Usually at the first break we had kids trying to talk the leaders in to taking us all home Often they just left the kids on the bus. They still had to pay them. We were supposed to be ready at 5 and always had to wait for several. The worst part was the only reason I took the job was so they would hire my cousin. She showed up for 3 days. She was late all 3 days. The first day she was late because she was getting all gussied up! LOL If I need that job done I would do anything I could not to hire a bunch of kids! | |||

North Central Illinois | Pretty sure you are right. However, I recall a lawsuit over the death of a migrant worker who disappeared in the extreme heat and wasn't found until 6 weeks later. This article does mention the lawsuit, but it doesn't get the attention like those two girls. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-migr...

| If you are asking about me. I was born and raised in the Midwest. My preferred job was putting up small squares. I worked a lot for a dairy. I always said they made hay every dayl If it was dry it was small squares. If it rained they chopped! | |||

Pilot Grove, Missouri | What seed brands are you planting and who does their detassling? From what most who know have replied, most of the industry already uses migrant labor. Patrick

SWOH | Takes more than two kids to detassel a couple thousand acres. Or 10,000. There are still kids out there that want to work and do a good job. They aren’t as numerous as they used to be. I’m all for supporting the local communities and giving kids an opportunity at their first job and getting kids involved in agriculture that normally wouldn’t have that opportunity. But the job has to get done and get done well and on time. We’ve hired a lot of high school kids over the years and lately every year we wonder why we just don’t go to migrant labor for next year. And it’s not just the kids, the parents get worse every year. We’ve never hired migrant labor, but the last couple of years we’ve had trouble getting enough local kids to get done what we need to get done. I don’t like it anymore than some of you do but I understand completely why Pioneer would make that move and I doubt it has anything to do with wages. Maybe it’s different in other areas but we have trouble getting enough kids to begin with and when a bunch of them quit after the first day it’s a little disheartening.

central IN | No different than McDonalds using computer screens to take your order vs. paying someone $15/hour. Everyone is trying to make a buck.

Tex Aggie - 3/14/2019 13:01 Y’all keep bitching about high seed corn prices .... Yep, it's just economics. We need more immigrants! We wouldn't have roofs or roads in my part of the world without them. And they're the best rogueing crews! Work damned hard for not much money. Not many white people want to work that hard (me included). Immigration makes everyone better off. Let those immigrants get the jobs they need so badly, and let us have cheaper roofs, roads, and corn seed. The USA is in grave danger of becoming geriatric Japan if we don't let in more immigrants.
