Subject: RE: Have you tried the no-till beans into rye before??

just realized I didn't answer all your questions...

This is my first time trying organic no-till beans here in IL.

I was involved with a little organic no-till research in NC.

The rye seeding rate was only 60 lbs/acre with 25 lbs of hairy vetch drilled the last week of August '08.
The vetch didn't amount to anything.

We were originally planning to plant corn in this experiment but decided to switch to beans when we realized that we essentially didn't have any vetch.

We were also planning to drill into standing rye but decided to roll in late May with a cultimulcher to prevent random lodging. We heard lots of popping as the cultimulcher rolled over the rye... only rye on the edges of the plots came back up.

I will keep adding pics to the picasa web album as the season goes along...
