Patents of course grant a monopoly for 20 years from the time the patent is applied for so they of course provide for a very high level of appropriation.
Monsanto is playing this game to the fullest and for the farmers paying extraordinary prices for seed it feels more like "expropriation." That's especially so when overproduction caused from the widespread adoption of that seed causes commodity prices to fall.
