Those are all good points and those aspects infiltrate a lot of relationships.

From a guy’s perspective it is hard to compete with the lifestyle of the 9-5 crowd that hauls a camper around every weekend. Many of the people that do that really can’t afford to. It is actually frustrating because the path to long term financial health is to work hard early in life and pay off debts. Many people in today’s society live paycheck to paycheck and are only a small setback away from financial hardship their entire lives. Sometimes it is out of love and concern that a person works hard and then spends the money earned on things that make more money instead of on wants. We farmers are in a somewhat unique position in that we sometimes have the opportunity to increase our future income by reinvesting in our business. Most people earning a wage don’t have that option. Our workaholic attitudes often stem from a desire to ensure that our families never do without.

Everything you said makes sense though. Those are all very valid issues and concerns and I’m not belittling them. They are every bit as important as the financial side. We tend to focus on the farm and not the relationship side of things. We often tend to think “tomorrow”. Until tomorrow doesn’t happen. In truth there are couples out there that are at both extremes of the spectrum. Some spend more than they make and lose their relationship because of the financial strain. Some lose their relationship because all the effort goes into financial health. Likely the best path is a healthy balance. It’s hard to find that balance sometimes though. Being our own boss makes it easy to become a workaholic.
