On earlier engines, you can reuse rod bolts / nuts.

It wasn't until much later, that they started with "one time use" rod bolts. {I wouldn't even attempt to give advice on those, need to have correct service manuals (with pictures) to verify which connecting rod style and bolts and their individual specs}
