Wow Von glad you got it figured out. Didn't know you were going this deep. Glad you are putting a relay in. We have had issues with those boxes with the mentioned scenario. They are good but the spike will blow the internal fuse. Believe they are good for 8 amps. We had problems where the solenoids would pull more amps when hot so it caused the same effect. They are repairable if it happens. Ryan has always been good when I have called.
