Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | There is something to seeing a race live. Any sport for that matter. I went to Daytona a few years ago and really understood bump drafting after that or why a car coming around turn 4 has more speed than another car...probably got a push down the backstretch. You don't usually get to see that on TV but at the track you get the full view. I was impressed at just how fast those cars are moving.
Now, one sport you really need to see live to appreciate is NHRA drag racing. The sound shakes you. You can't even think. I do enjoy going to those races. But, their having the same problems as NASCAR. They have tried to copy the chase in points. I wish they would just leave it alone. I hope they don't add anymore races. Pretty well saturated the market as it is. NHRA is becoming a victim of it's own success. Used to be about every year you would see a new record. Speeds were increasing 5 mph/year. They are close to what can physically be achieved. Now, it comes down to the crew chief reading the track and setting the clutches correctly. Some driver reaction time and mechanical abilities to keep the motor running for 4 seconds but that's about it. Cars look about the same but I don't think the rules are quite as stringent in the NHRA. I hope they don't try to make everyone equal as they have in NASCAR.
Watching the events on TV has their pluses. A lot of information. replays, and no hassles with traffic and people. |
