center of Kankakee county, IL. | Been a casual fan for 55 years. Originally, the lure for me was the cars and the power they made (not always reliable as seemed many engines came apart ). The rapid rise in popularity 20 years ago seemed to be from Dale E and the intrigue of the southern drivers. At the same time the cars we bought at the dealer became more and more dissimilar to the “stock cars on the track”. Now we have come full circle and the fans that lost the personality intrigue of following the sport are gone, and those that still watch are forced to watch 35-40 clones of “car makes”...really? Not many young people today have interests (other than on an iPad) of the gasoline engine and building performance with stock cars. Fix it? I guess watch or follow the track that has the type of racing you like ( I assume for most purists that would be:Richmond, Martinsville, Is Darlington still a race?, Dover and Bristol). Those that want to see massive wrecks watch Talledaga and Daytona. Other than Michigan you are pretty much stuck with 1.5 mile tri ovals that produce clone yawners.
