I have had many Asian women ask me where I'm from. It's crazy. Usually at Hy-Vee Chinese or any other Chinese restaurant. They will literally just flat out ask you "what you are"

The Mennonites and Amish have a similar custom of nosy questions. This takes the form of "what kind of work do you do?" "Where are you from?" "What church do you go to?" "Who are your parents?" The goal is not to be nosy, but to establish some sort of connection. I'm guessing that's the case with women you describe. All people have a desire for community, a desire to fit in, an attachment to those like ourselves. The questions you hear are born out of that desire to identify similarities and establish relationships.
