Subject: RE: Strip-Till Row Units

Pocahontas County, IA
Its fairly easy to convert a row crop no till single shank cultivator to strip till purposes. Believe it was a Sukup 9700 that we used. Added a floating row cleaner and cut off the mounting plate for the big blades used to bolt the single sweep shares on the shank. Mounted a "Birds Beak" point on the shank as It was a bit narrower than the stock piece and threw out less dirt. This may save some $ for real equipment after your experiment. Here in NW Iowa, on our heavy wet soils it was a plus to till about 5-6" deep, place dry fertilizer and leave a fairly clean strip to warmup and dry a little bit the next spring. In a dry fall the worked area looked very chunky and I was concerned we would not get good seed to soil contact. Turned out the clumps would shatter nicely after the row cleaner on the planter hit it. Looked real good after the planter had been through it.
Good Luck!
