SW “Ohia” | kipps,
The photos below give a basic idea, and they definitely share some lineage with your picture. These are called “five window” or “five over five” houses here. Five windows up top with four and a centered door below. They’re simple houses usually built mid-1800’s. Probably 50/50 if they’re brick or wood frame. Stone is only seen if you are right on the banks of the Ohio River.
The basic rectangular area typically contains two rooms downstairs (center wall parallel to the short end and offset to right of the door) and one large bedroom upstairs. Upstairs has usually been divided at some point. (Mine was one room until the 1970’s. Family of six all slept in one room!) Porches varied within three usual style. Tall comes off the roof and has large pillars like a southern mansion, middle-wide comes off below the upstairs window and goes across the entire width, and middle narrow comes off below the upstairs windows but only covers the door and two closest windows. Chimneys usually on both ends, unless the stairs are on an end, then only one. Basements are rare because of our water table, but exist where they could drain. Usually only accessible from outside. Ornate trimwork is rare.
The rear kitchen wing addition is common here too, usually on the left side. Can be single or two story. Bathrooms can seemingly be added anywhere, even upstairs. Additions on a narrow end are seen occasionally, usually a garage or bedroom.
Smaller farms will have a shrunk version with only three window upstairs and two/door downstairs (surprisingly called a “three over three.”). Very large farms can have up to 7 or 9 windows, but those are pretty rare.
