Subject: RV Memories (Part 1)

Texas
Last week, Dad finally sold what he believes will likely have been his last RV. We made a lot of memories in them, so I decided to share some of the humorous (only in hindsight) stories from the last three.

I blissfully remember my little-kid delight when Dad brought the fifth-wheel trailer home. I was especially happy about the fact that it had a second bedroom at the very back! My parents made a few modifications (reupholstery and such) and then we were off for vacation. I remember this as being our most trouble free and my favorite of the RV’s (primarily because I had my own room); however, it did create some funny memories.

The downside to having a clothes closet at the very end of a trailer, is that the end bounces the most. I was still too young to care, but my parents were bothered by the fact that every time we traveled to the next RV site the hangers that my clothes were on would bounce off of their rack and if we were fortunate enough for the closet doors to remain closed they would be in a pile at the bottom of the closet, which was better than if they were in a pile on the floor.

Additionally, my parents’ bedroom was at the front of the trailer and partially in the gooseneck portion. This created a problem for my dad, as he could not stand up in that area, and he would also frequently forget this and bump his head. Dad also found the bathroom to be smaller than what he desired.

We had the habit of driving until well after dark and having to use the after hours RV Park checkin. Frequently, we seemed to be traveling in colder climates than home. Mom or I would stand outside shivering while holding a flashlight so Dad could see to hook up to the RV site. Then we would go inside the RV, pick up everything that had fallen on the floor during travel and wait for it to warm up. That was the best case scenario, the alternate scenario was when Dad (pardon that, I meant an anonymous individual) would forget to refill the propane tanks (our heating source) and Mom and I would resort to throwing blankets into the dryer for warmth.

After watching The Long Long Trailer (1953 film starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz), I remember begging Dad to let me ride in the trailer. Much to my chagrin, Dad wisely denied my request…multiple times… and I remained safely stuck in the back seat of the pickup.

After several trips, I started hearing, “If we had a motor coach instead of this trailer”…..fill in latest complaint. Clearly Dad wanted an upgrade.

Dad got his wish when he found a motor coach he wanted to trade for, and I remember my sadness on the trip to trade. You see, while the RV was being upgraded, I was being downgraded - from my own bedroom to a fold out couch!

However, the hindsight entertainment would continue, and I will happily share more of the stories later this week, unless I am boring you with my content. If so, let me know and I will discontinue posting the RV memories.
