Help wiring a new pump in the well

I always hear that comment, "220 volts will take half the amps that the same 110 volt pump will use". But, does it really use less Kw overall, as each side uses half the amps for sure, I know this, but now you have two sides using half the amps, which equal the same amps that the 110 volt unit would use.

I have wired a boatload of rectifier units on pipelines CP units in the past, and always had 220 loops dropped by power companies for convenience. It allowed us to make the decision of going either way, or using what we had in inventory, and a linemen once told me it was cheaper for them to drop 220 service than 110. Go figger. Smaller wire requirements maybe for the smaller amp draw per leg. I didn't question him.

That was back in the day when they would drop service to anyone just to get an account, these days, they charge quite heftily to drop a loop.
