Cut way too late. Your feeding straw. Cut before heads emerge.
I'm tending to agree with this post.. If the heads are made its' losing protein by the day. Not as fast as if it were oats as there is a little more of a window of harvest for triticale but when I used to plant fall trical it was just about 5 feet tall and I had to use a discbine to cut it. Made great silage and tested close to 17% protein.. That said this year sucked as far as getting it up on time. One year it was to wet to get into cut it so I put it up as straw and it was a mistake. I learned the hard way not to use it to be calves with it as the beards would get caught in the calves throats and l ended up loosing some expensive registered Holsteins at the time. Even larger cattle can have problems with the beards. When the trical went into flag stage you had up to a week before it started to drop drastically in protein or create a beard for the grain.. With oats it's only a coupe days.... Heck of a yield but it took a good amount of N to give it the spring boots and yield.. Personally I"ve never had that great of luck planting spring triticale,,,,
One a side note one year I had planted Fall Trical and it was an open winter and in Feb, I frost seeded my alfalfa and it was the best clean crop of alfalfa I ever had... Each year is different though..... |
