Subject: RE: Why do outside pay credit card fuel sales stop @ $75

When the card is swiped at the pump before pumping, it checks the card validity and credit before starting. Typically the credit check is is set at $75, from which the card processing system sets a "hold" on that credit, pending the actual transaction with the exact amount (which happens when you finish pumping and hang up). The pump will stop at $75 because it hadn't checked more then that. This figure hasn't changed in years, but it was supposed to cover the majority of typical gas fillups in cars, long before frustrating owners of monster pickups with gas topping $4/gal.

Unused credit from a "hold" (purchase less then $75) is not released immediately, the bank may not let it be tied up for hours or a few days later. This is also frustrating to get your card rejected due to "over credit limit" even if you never made enough purchases to bring you to the limit.
