southern MN | Ha, I wanted to grow some wheat last year because oats gets so sketchy..... but when May came along it was still raining too hard to get in the field I knew that wouldn’t be worthwhile. Haven’t grown wheat since they started testing protein. Planting my oats in Nay would be a low test weight deal; wheat would be a disaster.....
Coop stopped buying oats 3 years ago, that made it a little tough. I typically grow 10-25 acres of oats. I can run it through my cattle, but it’s nice to sell some. The dairy fella that baled and bought most of the straw sold out this winter, so now I’ll have to look for a new straw market.
Never made much anyhow, just a different crop, different workload, place to put manure, could grow some cover crops easily, etc. my dirt is a little too wet and heavy to make good small grains. They do best on light ground, get in early, very early.
See how it goes next year. Corn and soybeans are such money makers, it will be hard to stick with my oats. *
