dad built his share of miles of fence. Never used tie wire method. H post then brace post down to base of the 3rd. large spike maybe 60d sinkers. Usually would notch upright post maybe 5/8" depth for a nice fit and appearance. Usually 6 or 8" for the gate mount post.
