Subject: RE: Building those braces

Leesburg, Ohio
We use at least 6” or evan 8” diameter posts, at least 8-9’ long, and buried at least 4’ in the ground, with ALL dirt that was removed from the hole tamped back in aroind the post. Or drive them with a hydraulic post driver. No concrete necessary.
Space end and second post at least eight feet apart, ten feet is better...gives better geometry to resist pulling up on second post. With ten foot spacing and a good ten foot brace pole, at double brace or deadman is not necessary. If eight foot or less spacing, use either a deadman anchor tied to the brace wire, or a double H (three posts with two brace poles and two brace wires).
Brace pole located within a foot or less from the top od the posts, held in place by either long pins (preferred) or notched into the posts...nails are worthless here.
Two loops of brace wire in figure eight, under a pin at ground level on back of end post, and over pin sticking thru back of second post that holds brace pole (fence staples are worthless here).
If high tensile wire is used for brace wire, bring both ends of the loop to a tightener ratchet and crank it tight before stretching fence.
If using number nine brace wire, two loops in figure eight around same pins as above, but bring opposite ends of the wire around second post and wrap on itself on opposite sides of loop next to inside of post. Then twist with a section of rebar until tight, and prop end of bar against brace pole.

In your pic, it looks like you used three loops, and it appears to be very loose even after twisting wire...that’s not good...posts will lean. Also appears quite a bit of the length of the posts is wasted above the fence wire....should bury them deeper to begin with...no substitute for depth in this job.
