As a good friend and cattleman told me a few years ago when I asked this same question. He said, “meet me back here a year from today and I’ll answer that question”. People would ask my grandpa "What's winter looking like" He'd respond "see me in may and i'll let you know exactly how it went" He used to read ember days He had a pretty darn good grasp on weather doing this.
