I was a little disappointed with my test results. Going to have to supplement the cows. It was made a little late while flowering. This was winter triticale baled the end of May and round baled and wrapped the following day. Just wondering what others experiences have been with triticale baleage? Feeding to hereford cows and bred heifers.
Not sure about 'answers' (I'm not that 'expert' - - - LOL) but I have some questions.
Had the crop been under some moisture stress just before heading started?
The variety - - - optimized for grain production (semi-dwarf or some such)?
From the feed test you caught this crop at perhaps its worst time - - in reading the recommendations the soft dough stage is recommended. So you caught the plants before they really set seed and after they have maximum lignin and stalk development.
I would think that either you have to harvest it a little earlier (before the seed panicle is set) or a little later (when the kernels are in the soft dough stage).
You had a great looking stand so it would be quite frustrating to not get good feed out of it.
Dunno if you have varieties available to you that are really forage optimized - - - -but that might help somewhat in getting better feed out of the baleage. |
