If it can't get enough air it will smoke and run high egts. Saw a cat 3406e that cracked the manifolds and took the chrome off the exhaust pipe wastegate was stuck partially open and previous owner had hot trim codes in it, still ran like a raped ape though.
New holland t8040 smokes and manifold glows at night
