North Central South Dakota | Yes, bale processors save hay. How much is the question. After feeding with one going into the third winter I would say 25-30%. A good rule of thumb is one bale(1500-1800 lb.) per 50 head. The key is not to over feed. Also feeding on the ground only works when it's frozen. We feed on a field next to the ranch in a different spot every day. The manure is then spread on the field by the cows instead of in the cow lot. In the spring we will no till right through where we fed all winter with no problems. We did feed in hay racks and bale feeders, this works so much better, all the cows eat at once and not all that wasted hay around the feeder. Also not much manure to haul. |
