The money should always go towards feeding cattle first if they need it, not hoping it saves some hay.
Run some numbers - say the processor does an amazing job and saves 10 bales over the winter. 10x40=400 dollars saved, 10 bales will get you thru an extra week tops, then they have to eat the processor.
$5000 processor/40= 125 bales. Which is a month and a half more of feeding.
I would say if you are feeding 10 bales per week and only saving 10 bales per year your processor or the operator is doing an amazingly poor job. How about your feeding 240 bales per winter and saving 15% = 36 bales x 40 =$1440 I have no processor myself but I think my neighbor figures at least 15% but he feeds less than I would also.
