If the pipe freezes due to power outages the hollow element collapses upon itself so the pipe doesn’t burst/split. Happened a couple times to me. I wouldn’t want to push it more than a few times of course. The nipples freeze up but once they hit 70ish lbs they mess with it enough to break the ice off for the warm water behind it.
