SW So Dakota
I'm 55 and we have always weaned calves for as long as I can remember. Right or wrong it's just what we do. We have done some feeding tests and consistently calves can gain 2.5 to 2.7 pounds per day for the first 30 days. We give 3 rounds of shots and usually don't have much trouble. Used to calve in March and push them hard for 3 months and sell 8 weights. Now we calve in May and ease them along trying to keep them green and sell 5 and 6 weights. I'd never go back to March and all that feed. More profit these days.
