Prussic acid risk is pretty simple (at least by my simple mind's understanding of it). It's highly volatile and evaporates into the air pretty quickly as the leaves dry. It's created when the leaves are damaged either by frost, fast growth after drought, or by cutting/conditioning, not sure if freeze damage releases more of it then mechanical conditioning or not, but I would guess it's pretty much the same deal. The main risk with prussic acid is from either grazing a damaged crop OR green chop. No risk at all in hay. Maybe there's some risk with silage and balage if it's put up very wet, but it's generally not a concern I don't think.

Nitrate levels are nitrate levels no matter how it's put up. It's a good idea to always get the bales sampled for nitrate levels especially if feeding to bred cows.
