Hopefully your seller is a honest guy. My bank charges a stop check FEE of $30. You can renew the stop 6 months later for another $30. Once a check is a year old, most banks won't honor it (stale check), but it's possible someone might. I see a lot of checks with a 90 day expiration written on them (Void after 90 days). Sounds like a good idea, but might not be legally enforceable. Might deter some unscrupulous people from trying to cash it however.

I delivered some grain to the co-op last week. They mailed a check the next day. Half of it arrived in a postal envelope with a note that the machine ate the other half.

Last year I sent a payment to Farm Plan in July. They called in August to say they didn't receive it. Paid over the phone to settle the bill. They received the July check in NOVEMBER and deposited it. ARGHH!

Last month, the mail carrier delivered my milk check to a neighbor that lives on a different road.
