Little River, TX | WYDave might have some answers.
These technologies are way beyond my limited learning. Though I can appreciate that regardless of the storage system used there will be some losses.
I have a good friend who has a bank of batteries to story the surplus from his wind generator and solar panels. His is 10 or more years ago technology that cost $30,000. He has cut his purchases of electricity by a third or more, but he also has done a lot of other things also. Saves a good bit by not having a swimming pool and hot tub anymore besides catching the wind.
As for wind power, I understand anything less than 8 mph may turn the blades but not generate any power. He also has a governor that puts the brakes on the generator when it is putting out way too much power, which is another factor.
He is as happy as a clam with the batteries, but there are probably more efficient ways to store energy.
I always thought the pumping of water up and using it to generate power on the day back down might be a real efficient system.
