Something productive to add to this post:

The equity that is built by others does not have an interest payment. The lack of that accrued interest can be all the difference in the world.

I don't call that productive. I call that obvious

Do you think none of these multi gen farms grow or borrow money? Maybe all farms should be in a charitable trust and the next gen should buy it from the trust so every generation starts out in debt. That would pretty much guarantee that no expansion ever gets done. First genners seem to be mired in tales of woe but don't understand that the multi gen farm is a living breathing thing that is bigger than it's current owner. Every generation has worked FOR the farm to feed the farm to grow the farm so that it will pass to the next. The current generation of a successful farm rarely rests on it's laurels. And walking away is not an option.
