Been quite a summer around here, but things are slowly getting back to normal.
I had a derecho wind storm come through end of Jun, did a lot of damage to my home and farm. We are still rebuilding. I had a lot of sleepless nights worrying about adequacy of my insurance, this is the first time I’ve ever had a claim. Thankfully, It turned out ok.
I have been spending a lot of time catching cattle and coordinating the rebuilding efforts. Add that in with a maturing crop and harvest and the last 3 months have just been a blur.
Despite the setback, we continue to make progress. We are down to the last little bit of harvest. All the stockpiled manure has been spread. Fall tillage work is getting done, and I am slowly bringing in new cattle.
I’ve been buying my normal 4wt steer/cutting bulls in the low to mid 150s. 7wt bawling steers in the low to mid 130s. Bought a big set of short yearling heifers in the low 150s. Have sold 8wt yearling steers for nov/dec/Jan deliveries at around -6fob and sold April fats to Tyson at +.05 delivered joslin.
Over the past few years, we have working to develop a service business of originating and delivering by-product feeds for livestock feeders. Mostly somewhat local, not a lot of cross country type stuff. We have been needing additional help with that and got to bring my younger sister Molly back to the farm this summer. She’s been great help keeping up with the office stuff. She even got us a new phone system and a website. She worked in web design and marketing before here.
We got that shipping pen I started this spring done, we been upgrading some old concrete aprons that my great grandpa poured. We built a new grain bin at the farm. If the weather holds we plan to build a 3rd cattle confinement this fall...
