West Central Wisconsin | About 20 years ago there used to be an older fellow drive past the farm every day on his way to work driving a Chevy Chevette. One morning he stuck his head in the barn door and asked if I might have an oil filter for his Chevette which he had changed the day before. I told him I was pretty sure I didn't and I think the guy just slumped into depression by the look on his face. He was 2 miles from work, 40 miles from home, and had a cross threaded oil filter in his hands. I told him to take the green Caprice parked by the house into town and stop at Car Quest on the edge of town and if he didn't have enough money to charge it to the farm. He stood there for a minute staring at me. I wasn't sure if he didn't hear me or didn't understand or was in disbelief of what he just heard so I finally asked if he knew where the parts store was and he just looked at me and said "are you sure"? I told him he has been driving past here for years so I figured he must have a job he is going to and if he didn't come back by the end of the day I'd have the Sherrif run the plates on his car and I would track him down. He straightened right up, had a grin from ear to ear, and said he'd be back. He was. | |
