| I had a similar experience once a number of years ago. I was riding an old beater Kawasaki 440 motorcycle - was WAY out in the boondocks when I happened to glance down and see that an oil line had worked loose and I was losing engine oil. I pulled over, grabbed the Leatheman, and tightened it back up, but was real low on oil at that point and I estimate about 25 miles from a town that would have oil but didn't have my wallet with me. I also didn't have a cell phone back then to call for help. So I was faced with the choice of either taking the chance of ruining the engine by riding until I found a place to call from - or walking. About that time, an old van appeared from nowhere and stopped. Driver asked if I needed help. I explained that I needed oil. He just happened to have a quart with him. Told him that if he gave me his mailing address, I would gladly reimburse the cost of the oil in the next day's mail. He refused the offer, but told me to repay the debt by stopping to help someone else someday. In the years since then, I have probably offered assistance to 4 or 5 stranded travelers. Most of them have offered me something for my time, but I refuse, tell them this story and ask them to do the same. | |
