Spray all the roundup you want, won't hurt a thing. As for varmints here's what you do. Drive a steel fence post at each end of your row of bales. Stretch 14 gauge electric fence wire between the posts, just hand tight. Don't electrify it. Put a block of wood under under the wire every 4 or 5 bales to keep it up off the bales about 6". Steeple it loose to keep the wire up there. Do it the day after you wrap it. Sounds too simple to work but it does.
I've never had trouble with critters burrowing in from below, always from above, and always when bales are in a remote location away from people and traffic. This is one case where human activity is your friend.
I was close to giving up baleage in remote locations before I came up with this cure. Not one hole in 2 years.
