Western Nebraska | How easy would it be to give up your son if you knew that to be raised from the grave in three days time he would have to die one of the most horrible deaths man could devise? Could you willingly, even eagerly, give up your child if you knew that they were going to have nails driven through their wrists and their feet and then hoisted up in the air to hang on their arms until their strength left them and they slowly suffocated? Would it be an easy thing to not only have to stand by and watch your flesh and blood, who had never done anything but bring you joy, die in that manner? God had to allow his Son to die a sinner's death in order for the sacrifice to be complete. Not only did God stand by while his Son was falsely accused, beaten, mocked and spit upon, then he had to watch him be tortured with nails driven through his wrists and his feet. He had to stand by and allow all of that, and then He had to turn his face from Christ in the hour of death and allow his own Son to die with no comfort and no peace that comes to those who are saved. Christ died with terror in his human heart facing a lost eternity. It might be worth pointing out as well that there is scripture that says that a single day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years are as a single day to God. Eternity is timeless and the time Christ spent suffering after His death is beyond our ability to comprehend.
After I became a parent it became much more real to me how great the sacrifice was that was made so that we humans might have a hope of eternal life. I would much rather face those things myself than to ever have to have a child of mine go through that. Yet God was able and willing to allow His Son to go through that so that we might be given the hope of an eternity with Him. Salvation does not depend upon our grasp of these sort of things. We don't have to understand the prophesies in the Revelation to gain salvation, nor do we have to decipher the warnings of Isiah or the minor prophets in order to gain salvation. What we have to do is to be willing to relinquish control of our own life and give it over to God to guide us as He sees fit. If we are diligent in study and prayer He will reveal to us in His time the mysteries of His word. Honest prayer is the foundation of a relationship with God. That is where it all starts. | |
