Don't know your whole set up. Not a dairy guy either. But I assume your barn would also shade the whole area or some of it. No sun all winter could make for a lot of snow/ice build up. Most bunks are set for cattle to face south or east / west. I think cattle facing south gets the most sun IN the bunk and where cattle stand in late afternoon at the warmest time of the day. Not 100% sure on that. Post a diagram of your set up might help.
