If his big cows are used to full feed of hay and still never seem to get filled up feeding corn isn't going to help. The university articles will tell you that 1# of corn will replace 2# of hay but you have to limit feed the cows the hay to see the benefit. If cows have 24/7 access to hay and eat say 45# a day if you start feeding them 5# of corn a day they will likely still eat the 45# of hay in addition to the corn. Now if you can limit the amount of hay and only give them 35# a day and 5# of corn you will see the cost savings. They will stay in good condition but they will act hungry all the time. I have 1500# cows also and like to put out several days of hay at a time and it is mostly alfalfa. So I don't feed any corn but I do give them a bale of cornstalks in a separate feeder. I don't force them to clean up the cornstalks but they eat the leaves and husks and I use whatever they don't eat for bedding.
