MD | Find a source of raw manure and use that. Dried chicken manure from layers runs around $380/ton in 50# bags last time I priced it. If you buy a tractor trailer load (24 ton) in bulk, you can save money, but the trucking is expensive. There are several sources of supply, here's one that I have bought from: https://www.krehereggs.com/compost-fertilizer
We use the dried stuff but only on vegetables as it's pasturized, so exempt from the 120 day rule. Also too expensive for field use IMHO, i.e. spreading on corn.
Perdue shutdown their plant in Delaware to convert over to a new process that uses composting. When I used to buy their Microstart, it was frequently unavailable, they were always sold out. IIRC I used to pay about $200/ton delivered in bulk, a reasonable price (for organic fertilizer) for use on fields. I haven't tried (or priced) their new product.
If you are looking for an inexpensive source for nitrogen for corn, use a legume cover crop the year before you plant, supplement with some raw manure before you plant. | |
