Interesting.
Dad was who taught me to load, and he never had wagons with a back rack when raising it, so I would think loading this way might be related. You stack it vertical in a rick like that, always adjusting where you place them to make it “fall forward”, then start leaning the rest of the tobacco against that back rick at a sharp angle, alternating sticks in and sticks out. Doing this makes a solid back rick so you don’t need a rack.
Dad can stack them a lot better than I can. :)
I know on the other side of the river, wagons with a sloped back rack are popular for loading it like you say. Seems like it would a lot easier that way.
