Perhaps "everyone" should not be driving, if they are not capable of reacting to a situation in a reasoned and appropriate manner. It's the old "a bug flew down my shirt, so I ran into a fire hydrant" logic. Have you listened to the ATC recordings of some of the near-misses which have been posted? The guy who landed the King Air with 100 something hours in a 172 could have applied the logic and said "the pilot had a heart attack, so I dove into the ground" or the guy in New York could have come up with all sorts of different results beside "...we're gonna be in the Hudson..." but because they dealt with the situation instead of going off the deep end, things turned out far better then they might have. i don't know that either of them were farmers. Lots of "city slickers" are not idiots.
Perhaps you do not think it is 'fair' to expect operators to respond to situations in a reasoned and calculating manner, but I think when you take control of something which puts other people's life or property at risk, you have a duty to maintain your composure at least well enough to avoid killing people through you own thoughtlessness.
