Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND | Granted you live where salt damage is a problem, but one would atleast hope the suspension of a car would be made of material (either corrosion resistance or metal thickness) that would outlast the body sheet metal.
I notice the area around the wheel well shows no rust through. Seems to me that axle is under engineered, in that it is not sturdy enough to take some road corrosion and still do it's job.
Have seen the same problem with frame rust through on Toyota and the high $$ Mercedes Benz stuff, so it is not strictly an American car problem. I suspect another axle with no corrosion (used from a southern state or new) would run another 90,000 miles. If Ford shows no interest, maybe talking to a government agency concerned with problems like this (NTSB ?) or atleast the threat of such might break loose one of those secret warranty deals you read about.
