My 20 year old cattle trailer axle broke the same way. A combination of salt, manure and age led to it's demise. I tore it apart, cut off the old pipe and welded a new pipe in place. We still use the trailer, but it does not see much road time.
As the others suggested, I would look for a salvage axle, fix it and sell it.
