Subject: RE: Losing a son

Lac qui Parle County Minnesota
I'm on an EMS critical stress debriefing team, and just had a debriefing involving a suicide. Mental illness is tough to detect and to deal with. A cut or a broken arm is easy to deal with. You bandage or splint it and in a few weeks, we're good as new.
You can't splint a broken mind or soul. It may not seem easy for us to see the problems clearly or might think that it can be easily over come. For your son and others like him, the problems are real to them, even though they seem unreal to us. Your son lost his struggle with this health issue, the same way a cancer patient succumbs to cancer.
Please take care of yourselves in this time of sorrow. Keep routines, abstain from drugs and alcohol, find someone to talk to, seek counseling, and realize that all the thoughts and emotions that you are feeling right now, are normal for an abnormal situation. They may never go away, but they will get better!
