SW Texas | IMO diesel is a good additive if you are trying to control fairly large brush or trees by spraying directly on the trunk. the diesel will help absorb into the bark or large branches. A good crop oil will do pretty much the same thing.
If you are doing a broadcast foliar spray to kill small brush or large weeds, then the diesel really isn't that good of a surfactant. Been used for years though as has already been posted, although I suspect a lot of the usage was due to the fact that diesel was readily available on the farm and years ago was relatively cheap.
