southern MN | I notice (not just in farming) the sharper long lasting business people are those that look at the pennies as well as the 100 dollar bills as they go through their career. I don’t mean penny pinching tightwads or eternally unhappy even when they get something for half price, but the folks with sharp pencils.
Those that laugh off $100 here and $1000 there and don’t care what a bearing costs because it’s not worth shopping and so on are the ones that seem to come and go.
You are doing fine, and you have a very good question. The land owners have a budget and the costs for old folk are rising rapidly, but that is their issue. Our businesses have a budget as well and our budget needs to work also.
The rise and fall of corn from $2.xx to 7.xx back to 2.xx has to be reflected in land costs at some point in time.
Of course the land owners hold the asset and for a while they can find another fool to pay too much for their asset, so it’s tough for the thinking farmer to make a go of it in times like these.
In my other reply I mentioned a 5 acre tree lined plot I take care of. It’s 200 bu dirt if it were part of a clear drained 80, but the undrained wet spots and tree lined and deer makes it actually 100 bu ground, and keeping the trees at bay costs more than normal. So is it $250 ground or free for maintaining it ground? The answer is yes, depending the point of view I suppose.
