With that many horses they usually only had direct control of a couple of the lead horses. Most draft horses that had very much training didn't need very much handling. They knew more about what to do than the "driver" did. My dad told me of being able to plant straight rows with a horse drawn planter without even having to use the reins. The horses where so well trained that they just knew what to do and did it.
